What is a doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides non-medical emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.
Not all doulas do the same work. Some specialize in birth, others in postpartum care, and many choose to support families across both stages. Some also have additional training in areas such as breastfeeding, infant sleep, or childbirth education.
As a birth doula, I help families prepare for labour, understand their options, provide comfort measures, support partners, and offer continuous support throughout the birth experience.
As a postpartum doula, I support parents as they recover, adjust to life with a new baby, navigate feeding, build confidence, and find their own rhythm as a family.
Doulas don't replace midwives, nurses, or doctors, and we don't provide medical care. Instead, we work alongside your healthcare team, complementing their work with continuity, practical guidance, and personalized support.
For example, a doula might
-
help you prepare questions before a prenatal appointment,
-
explain what an induction involves so you can discuss it with your healthcare team,
-
suggest comfort techniques during labour,
-
support your partner in finding ways to help,
-
spend time with you after birth
-
work through breastfeeding challenges with you
-
talk about how you're feeling
Families often choose a doula because...
-
They want continuous support from someone who already knows their story.
-
They're expecting their first baby and don't know what to expect.
-
They're living far from family and don't have a support network nearby.
-
They're new to Sweden or Denmark and want help understanding how the maternity system works.
-
They want their partner to feel informed and involved.
-
They've had a previous difficult birth and want a different experience this time.
-
They value evidence-based guidance without pressure or judgment.
-
They want support that continues after the baby is born, not only during labour.

Family and friends are invaluable, but they usually visit because they love you.
A postpartum doula is there because supporting your recovery and your transition into parenthood is her role. Those forms of support don't replace one another; they complement each other.
