What to expect
My training was based on the Föda Utan Rädsla (FUR) theory, which translates to "Birth Without Fear." This theory emphasizes the significance of eliminating fear from the birthing process. FUR advocates for an understanding that fear can impact the birthing experience and aims to equip parents with tools and techniques to alleviate anxiety, promoting a calm and empowered birthing environment.
During labor, I will be by your side, offering comfort measures, advocating for your choices, and assisting with pain relief techniques. If I see you are stressed I will use tools to bring you back to the present moment.
Post-birth, I continue to nurture and guide you, by listening to you, facilitating bonding, and helping out with aspects related to the first time at home with your baby.
Despite having an abundance of strategies and insights, what truly counts is your experience towards it. What matters most is ensuring your emotional comfort and confidence, not employing methods.
The Road to Birth Doula Support
01. Starting point
You book a cost-free introductory meeting, which can be called a “me” meeting. Whether it is an in-person meeting at a coffee place of your choice or a virtual conversation, it is the time to introduce myself and tell you how I work, ensuring clarity about my role as Birth Doula. We will have about 30-45 minutes.
02. Birth preparation meetings
If you choose to move forward with my services, we will begin by signing The Letter of Agreement and securing your booking with a nominal fee. This fee will be deducted from subsequent payments unless any cancellations occur. Following that, we will schedule two personalized 2-hour meetings, designed to enhance your birth experience. These sessions will be conveniently held at your home.
-
The first one is a “you” meeting because it centers on your preferences, desires, and expectations for the birthing process. It is a time to share your history, and previous experiences, and express your thoughts and concerns. We will also cover labor phases and hospital routines, and start your birth plan.
-
The second one is more practical, and we will go through phases of labor, mental birth preparation, breathing exercises, positions during childbirth, comfort measures, and strategies for your support person.
03. On-call
I will be on-call around the clock for 5 weeks. It means 2 weeks before the estimated due date until the baby arrives.
In case of a recommendation or approval for a cesarean, we can either go together to the hospital or arrange to meet there.
04. Birth support
When labor begins, you can contact me for guidance. We decide where to meet, either at your home or the hospital, and I will stay with you throughout the birth and for a while after the birth.
Regarding a cesarean section, my presence in the operating room will be subject to hospital policies. In some cases, I may be present during the preparation but not during the surgery itself. After the cesarean, I will be available in the recovery room or by the baby's side, according to your preference.
05. Follow-up meeting
I respect your space and reconnect later at your home to offer further support, especially adjusting to the initial phase at home.

What is a Birth doula?A birth doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, informational and practical support to expectant mothers, both before, during and after birth. Our role involves offering guidance, comfort measures, emotional support and advocating for the individual's rights during the birthing process. Doulas play an essential role in helping individuals navigate this important phase by providing comprehensive and ongoing support.
-
Is a doula like a coach? No. The role of a doula is quite distinct from that of a coach. While a coach primarily focuses on guiding and motivating to achieve specific goals in various areas of life, a doula offers continuous and comprehensive support during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. The role of a doula is to provide physical, emotional, and informational support, helping parents feel comfortable, informed, and supported during this special phase
-
How does a Birth Doula differ from a Midwife?A birth doula provides continuous and non-medical support during labor and delivery, focusing on the physical and emotional comfort of the person giving birth. They offers guidance, pain relief techniques, emotional support, and assist in communicating with the medical team to ensure the person's preferences and needs are respected. On the other hand, a midwife is a healthcare professional trained to provide medical care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Midwives conduct prenatal check-ups, perform health exams for both the mother and baby, monitor the progress of the pregnancy, and are qualified to deliver babies. They are trained to handle medical issues, interventions, and complications that may arise during childbirth, as well as provide postpartum care for both the mother and baby.
-
Why should I hire a Birth Doula?Hiring a birth doula ensures personalized, continuous support tailored to your needs. Research shows that having a doula result in shorter labors, reduced need for interventions, increased satisfaction with the birth experience, and improved communication with healthcare providers.
-
Do you only give support for natural and vaginal births? My doula services cover various birthing scenarios, not solely focusing on natural and vaginal births. I provide guidance and assistance for medicated births, which involve pain relief methods like epidurals, as well as caesarean, water births, home births, inductions, multiple births (such as twins or triplets), and other unique birthing situations. My goal is to offer continuous and personalized care, ensuring a positive and supported birthing experience, regardless of the chosen method or circumstances. However, I do not provide doula support for unassisted home births, where the couple decides against having a midwife present during the birth process.
-
Will a Birth Doula replace my partner's or support person’s role in the delivery room? No, a birth doula does not replace the partner’s or support person’s role. Instead, they complement each other. A doula supports both the birthing person and their partner/support person, providing guidance and reassurance while empowering them to actively participate in the birth process
-
What happens if you cannot attend my birth? In case of unforeseen circumstances, a backup doula or support system is arranged to ensure continuous support during your birth. Further details are discussed during our meetings and found on the letter of agreement.
